The company’s human resource is not only responsible in looking for competent and qualified individuals suitable to fill in a job vacancy. The department is also responsible in tasks involving employee relations and the employees’ compensation and benefits as set by the company and as what was agreed upon the signing of the employment contract. Thus, as it is the human resources department’s duty to conduct initial interviews of prospect employees, it is also the department’s task to conduct the exit interview.

Exit interviews are done before an exiting employee leave the company. The exiting employee should either be terminated, has resigned or has decided to retire. Conducting exit interviews is done with the aim to discover and discuss the employee’s concerns and opinions that he was not able to discuss or disclose with the manager or his immediate boss due to certain reasons such as fear.

Exit interviews are also beneficial to the company as it can determine the reason why an employee decided to file his resignation. Especially in situations where it has been noted that there are numerous resignation occurring in a particular span of time, exit interviews can determine if there is a connection or common reason between the resignations. Such reasons can be due to mismanagement, ethics concern or even abuse. Exit interviews help determine if there is a problem with the company’s policy or management.
